42055 Full RC

This mod includes motorized and remote controlled bucket wheel & conveyors, forward & backward drive, boom elevation control, superstructure rotation, and rear conveyor rotation. The instructions that I have included are to add the motors individually, with the excavator still assembled, not to rebuild the entire model. The parts list included is the list of extra parts needed that are not in the set itself. This list is NOT a complete parts list for the entire MOC. DISCLAIMER: I found the design of this MOC on the YouTube Account PPUNG DADDY - LEGO TECHNIC RC, and have created improved building instructions. The original video by the creator (shown below) includes the original building instructions.

Modification of 42055-1 Bucket Wheel Excavator

Wow, this makes the excavator about 100x better. Even with the smooth mod, things moved pretty slowly and a bit jerky - this mod not only adds the fun value of RC, but speeds up everything as well!

I was a bit stumped on the boom elevation parts, since I can't figure out how the 12-length axle can make it through both actuators' bevel gears and the outer frame, even on one side; eventually I just used 2 12-length axles (could've done with 2 10's) and joined them inside the 5x7 frame with a bush. Not the most secure, but it works!

Throughout the build I was continually amazed at how well this model adapted to being motorized, like it was designed with this in mind. Certainly during the original build I thought that open-air area full of axles was ripe for additional motors. But even steps like "wrestle the 5x7 beam frame out of the excavator" weren't nearly as hard as I expected: the T-shaped lift arms on either side just rotated nicely out of the way. Honestly the worst part was the very first motor for the rear-conveyer rotation... and that mostly because the walkway was a major pain to replace. I almost wish I had skipped that step, since the U-joints keep coming apart pushing the axle under the turntable which is really hard to re-connect.

But minor issues aside, this was an amazing experience. Thanks to both TMjolnir and PPUNG Daddy for making a huge set even more awesome (even though this did put a dent in my pocketbook as these are my first "big" Technic sets - this and the L350F which I used to source most of the extra motors and IR parts - worth it!).

I had the same problem with the axle, I ended up moving one of the actuators over by 1 stud, but your way actually sounds better. I am considering changing this mod to include lights and run on SBrick, so I might fix the axle problem at the same time. I am glad you enjoyed!

I was really thankful it was not S-brick, since I haven't made that investment yet, but I'm sure some people would love the variety. Not too hard to swap either way. (Though again, this model seems just primed for 3x IR receivers up there)

I may mention that the SBrick can be easily swapped out for IR if the builder wishes. (in the upgraded version)

Thankyou for this mod, works well, only thing was I added extra support for the XL motor for the conveyer/bucket motor. Excellent in that the instructions are for modifying the built model.
